Meaning and etymology of the Hebrew name Cozbi

Cozbi Cozbi

Cozbi is the Midianite woman, daughter of Zur, whom Zimri the Simeonite brings into the camp of Israel camp during the Peor incident. Both are executed by Phinehas (Numbers 25:6-18).

The name Cozbi comes from the Hebrew verb kazab (kazab), to lie. Derived nouns kazab (kazab) and akzab ('akzab) both mean a lie.
The Bible considers lies the ultimate opposite of whatever God is, stands for and wishes to bring about. Since God is Truth (Deuteronomy 32:4, Joh 14:6), satan is called the father of lies (Joh 8:44), and an idol a teacher of lies (Hab 2:18). God will not lie (1 Samuel 16:29), does not lie (Numbers 23:19), and may even not be able to lie (Tit 1:2).

The apparent paradox that arises when this statement is measured against God's omnipotence is easily solved by the notion that lies limit. An inability to limit oneself is a characteristic of omnipotence, not a challenge to it.

NOBS Study Bible Name List interprets the name Cozbi as False. Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names reads Lying.
