🔼The name Ir in the Bible
The name Ir occurs only once in the Bible. It's the name of the father of Huppim and Shuppim of Benjamin (1 Chronicles 7:12). Some scholars say this Ir is the same person as the Iri of 1 Chronicles 7:7, but there is no real reason to assume that.

For some reason, NOBSE Study Bible Name List forgoes this name. Alfred Jones (Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names) maintains that our name comes from the noun עיר ('ir), meaning city, and translates it with Citizen. BDB Theological Dictionary doesn't translate or interpret our name, but does confirm that it's identical to the noun עיר.
