Ishbak Ishbak

Ishbak is a son of Abraham with Keturah.

The name Ishbak comes, according to BDB, NOBSE and Fuerst, from the Aramaic shabaq (shabaq 3018) meaning to tear asunder, reduce to fragments, loosen, unbind, set free. When Jesus on the cross cries His famous 'Eli, Eli, lama sabachtani?' (Matt 27:46), He quotes Psalm 22:1 but in Aramaic. The original Hebrew uses the verb azab (azab 1594), which leave, forsake, loose. This verb is used in all kinds of ways, mostly as to be expected.

The fact that Jesus cries out to the Father with whom He is one, is enigmatic to say the least. We can be sure that Jesus knew exactly what was going on and why, and we must conclude that He addressed His human audience. It is our conclusion that He did not inquire of the Father and quotes Psalm 22 sort of coincidentally, but rather makes an urgent reference to the whole of Psalm 22 by citing its first line (Psalm 22 was not called Psalm 22 in those days).

The name Ishbak means Abandoned, Set Free, or Leaving (NOBSE).
