Meaning and etymology of the name Letushim

Letushim Letushim

The Letushim are descendants of Dedan, son of Jokshan, son of Abraham with Keturah (Genesis 25:3). They are mentioned along with the Asshurim and the Leummim.

The name Letushim is the plural form of the verb latash (latash), hammer, sharpen, forge, push. This verb is not very widely used, so it probably means something specific for a hand-working society. What that is we don't really know but the various contexts suggest that there is no single English equivalent of this verb.

In Genesis 4:22 we read about Tubal Cain who is a hammerer of implements of bronze and iron. In 1 Samuel 13:20 the Israelites go down to the Philistines, each to sharpen his plowshare, his mattock, and his hoe. The same usage occurs in Psalm 7:12, where God sharpens His sword and bends his bow against a man who does not repent. In Psalm 52:2 a mighty man's destructive tongue is compared to a sharpened razor. Job even complains that his enemy has sharpened his eyes at him (16:9).

For a meaning of the name Letushim, NOBS Study Bible Name List reads Sharpened. Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names reads Artificers, or Hammerers.
