Meaning and etymology of the name Leummim

Leummim Leummim

The Leummim are descendants of Dedan, son of Jokshan, son of Abraham with Keturah (Genesis 25:3). They are mentioned along with the Asshurim and the Letushim.

The name Leummim is the plural form of the unused root leom (l'm). Although this root is not used in the Bible, it is a familiar Semitic root (the Arabic word la'ama means assemble). Derivatives of this root that are used in the Bible are leom and leom (leom), both meaning nations, or people (Genesis 25:23, Psalm 44:14).

Other words for people are: goy (goy), which denotes corporeality (used in the name Haroseth-hagoyim), and am (am), which refers to a group of people that are related (as used in the names Amram, Amalek, Rehoboam, and possibly Gomorrah).

It doesn't happen often but on the meaning of the name Leummim, NOBS Study Bible Name List and Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names agree. Both read Peoples.
