Meaning and etymology of the name Lo-Ruhamah

Lo-Ruhamah Lo-Ruhamah

Lo-Ruhamah is the symbolical name that the prophet Hosea was to give his daughter (Hosea 1:6). Hosea's whole family was a bit of a symbol. His wife Gomer was a prostitute and Hosea was to marry her to symbolize God's fidelity towards wayward Israel. Their first son they have to name Jezreel, their second son is named Lo-Ammi.

The name Lo-Ruhamah consists of two parts. The first part is the word Lo (lo), the common particle of negation: no or without. The second part comes from the root raham (raham), meaning to love deeply or have mercy. HAW Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament adds the distinction that this verb usually applies to the affection of a "superior" to an "inferior." The prophet Isaiah uses it to reflect the love that a mother feels for her baby (49:15). King David uses it for the love that a father has for his child (Psalm 103:13). Very often this verb is used to describe the love or mercy God has for His people (Exodus 33:19, 2 Kings 13:23).

This verb comes from a root of which the meaning was lost over time, but in cognate language it has meanings varying from to be soft or gentle to being compassionate and affectionate. This root comes with a few derivatives that are parallel to our verb, most of which are expectable, such as rahamim (rahamim), meaning tender mercy (Genesis 43:30); rahum (rahum), meaning compassionate (Deuteronomy 4:31); even rahamani (rahamani), denoting compassionate women (Lamentations 4:10). The most notable derivation is the word raham (raham), meaning womb (Jeremiah 20:17, Job 10:18).

NOBS Study Bible Name List and Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names agree: the name Lo-Ruhamah means No Mercy.
