Meaning and etymology of the name Lot

Lot Lot

Lot is the son of Haran, the brother of Abraham and Nahor (Genesis 11:27). The abduction of Lot leads to the introduction of the hallowed Melchizedek (Genesis 14) but Lot's life spirals into ruin. He moves to Sodom where he received two guests. The townsfolk decide to abuse these guests of Lot and Lot proposes that they would have a go at his daughters. Fortunate for the daughters, and their fiance's, one of whom is right there, the guests are angels. Unfortunately for the townsfolk of Sodom, the angels destroy the city (Genesis 19).

The boyfriends decide not to go with Lot or his daughters, and subsequently perish. Lot, his wife and his two daughters escape the destruction of Sodom, although Lot's wife famously turns into a pillar of salt. The three survivors initially settle in a town called Zoar, but move on to live in the mountains. There the daughters realize that they have no offspring. They feed Lot wine and when he keels over, they rape him and conceive. Thus are born Moab, the father of the Moabites, and Ben-ammi, the father of the Ammonites (Genesis 19).

The name Lot comes from the verb Lot lut (1092) meaning wrap closely, envelop. The verb occurs just a few times. Sometimes it simply denotes the wrapping of an object - the sword of Goliath, whose name, strikingly, comes from a verb meaning to uncover (1 Samuel 21:9). Sometimes it serves to indicate gloom or suppression (Isaiah 25:7).

The verb Lot yields two derivatives: The noun lat (lat a; also spelled lat) means secrecy (1 Samuel 18:22, Judges 4:21). The noun Lot (lot) is identical to the name Lot and means envelope, covering. Besides the name Lot, the noun lot occurs only in Isaiah 25:7-8.
