אשד

The root אשד ('ashad) means to be a foundation or slope of a mountain. It's not used as a verb in the Bible but from it derive:

  • The masculine noun אשד ('eshed) meaning lower end or bottom (of a wadi or ravine). This word occurs in several other Semitic languages. In the Bible, it occurs in Numbers 21:15 only.
  • The feminine noun אשדה ('asheda), meaning slope or foundation (of a mountain). This word occurs only in plural and appears to be a generic term for hilly terrain: low rolling hill-country (Joshua 10:40, 12:8). This word is particularly associated with mount Pisgah (Deuteronomy 3:17, Joshua 12:3, 13:20).
