🔼Etymology of the name Eshan
The name Eshan comes from the verb שען (sha'an), meaning to lean on or trust in:
The verb שען (sha'an) means to lean on or trust in. Nouns משען (mish'an), משען (mash'an), and משענה (mish'ena) describe support of various kinds. Noun משענת (mish'enet) means staff; the proverbial object of support. The supporting staff's counterpart was the corrective rod: שבט (shebet), from a verb that means to smite or beat.
Our name's leading א ('aleph) is unexplained, but has little effect. Perhaps it's ornamental, perhaps it's indicative of an Aramaic influence.
