🔼Etymology of the name Joshah
The name Joshah appears to be drawn from the root ישה, but that root isn't used in the Bible, and there's no telling what it might have meant to the Hebrews:
The verb ישה (yshh) isn't used in the Bible but it may have meant to support or assist. Its only extant derivation is the noun תושיה (tushiya), a relatively rare word meaning skill or craftiness.
For a meaning of the name Joshah, NOBSE Study Bible Name List reads Yahweh's Gift, which is rather curious because there is no reference to the name Yahweh in the name Joshah. Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names simply reads Aid. BDB Theological Dictionary does not translate the name Joshah but does list it under the root ישה.
