απαξ

The adverb απαξ (hapax) means once (a word that occurs only once in a specified range of text is called a hapax legomenon), and its pedigree is obscure.

Like its English counterpart, our adverb may mean only one time (this happened only once), or once at some specific time (I went fishing once) or once and for all (once you see it, then you can't unsee it).

Our adverb is used 14 times in the New Testament, see full concordance, and from it derives:

  • Together with the preposition επι (epi), meaning on or upon: the adverb εφαπαξ (ephapax), meaning once for all, or all at once. This adverb is used 5 times; see full concordance.
