πωλεω

Abarim Publications' online Biblical Greek Dictionary

πωλεω

The verb πωλεω (poleo) means to sell, to offer for sale or (passively), to be offered for sale. It's of unclear origin, but it's used wholly similarly to the English verb to sell, without surprises. It's used 22 times in the New Testament, see full concordance, and from it derives:

  • Together with the noun πορφυρα (porphura): the noun πορφυροπωλις (porphuropolis), a seller of purple (Acts 16:14 only).
