Balak Balak

Balak, son of Zippor, is the Moabite king who tries to hire Balaam for the purpose of cursing Israel. The famous and enigmatic scene of the speaking donkey ensues. The only time that Balak is not mentioned in direct conjunction with Balaam is in Jud 11:25.

The name Balak comes from the sparsely used verb Balak (balaq 252), waste or lay waste (Isa 24:1,3; Jer 51:2). There are no derivations of this verb besides this name.

The name Balak means Devastator (BDB) or Empty (NOBSE).
