Meaning and etymology of the name Abda




Abda Abda


There are two men named Abda in the Bible. There's one father of Adoniram, who was appointed chief over the forced laborers of Solomon (1 Kings 4:6). Another Abda is a Levite and son of Shammua (Nehemiah 11:17). This Abda is either also known as Obadiah, or he has a brother named such (1 Chronicles 9:16).

The name Abda means Servant. Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names, NOBS Study Bible Name List and BDB Theological Dictionary equate the name Abda with Obadiah and read Servant (Of God), but the of-God-part is not implied in the name Abda.
