Meaning and etymology of the name Jahleel

Jahleel Jahleel

Jahleel is the third son of Zebulun, who is the tenth son of Jacob and sixth of Leah (Genesis 46:14). Jahleel is also one of the sixty-six who came to Goshen, and his brothers are Sered and Elon. The descendants of Jahleel formed their own sub-tribe, the Jahleelites (Numbers 26:26).

The name Jahleel consists of two elements. The final part is el (El), the common abbreviation of Elohim.

The first part of the name Jahleel comes from the verb yahal (yahal), meaning to hope or wait (Genesis 8:12, Micah 7:7). This verb yields two derivatives: yahil (yahil), meaning waiting, occurs only once, in Lamentations 3:26. The feminine noun toheleth (toheleth), meaning hope, occurs more often (Proverbs 13:12, Psalm 39:8).
