Jabin Jabin

There are two Jabins mentioned in the Bible, both kings of a Canaanite town called Hazor. The first Jabin attacks Israel under Joshua. Although this Jabin leads a monstrously large alliance of kings and armies, 'the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel (11:8).
Jabin number two, who lived about a century after the first one, is equally unfortunate. He and his general Sisera conquer and suppress Israel for twenty years, unto the insurrection lead by Deborah and Barak. The Canaanites are defeated and a lady named Jael single-handedly kills Sisera.

The name Jabin comes from bin (bin 239) meaning understand, consider, perceive, have insight, discern. Derivatives (bina (bina 239b) and tebuna (tebuna 239c) mean understanding, which are quite logical, but derivative bin (ben 239a) meaning `between' is perhaps harder to distinguish. A radar works by emitting bundles of rays. If the bundle is wide, two little objects in the distance will be reflected as one dot on the radar screen. If the bundle is narrow the two little objects will be separately distinguished. The use of `between' is fascinating, for instance in Gen 15:7, or Ex 13:9 (on your forehead = between your eyes).

The name Jabin means Insight, and the preceding yod may either simply make the verb active (He Will Perceive) or be a remnant of YHWH, YHWH, to argue the Divine origin of the insight, or the power obtained by it.

NOBSE reads He (God) Perceives. BED reads One Who Is Intelligent, Discerning.
