The name Shama occurs only once in the Bible (although it's spelled the same as the name of the town Shema). Shama is the brother of Jeiel, who are sons of Hotham the Aroerite. Both brothers are listed among the mighty-men of David, but play no further role in the Bible (1 Chronicles 11:44).

The verb שמע (shama') means to hear and may also mean to understand or obey. Noun שמע (shema') means sound. Nouns שמע (shoma') and שמועה (shemu'a) mean tidings, report or mentions.
