Meaning and etymology of the Hebrew name Ezri

Ezri Ezri

The name Ezri is a rare variant of the very popular name-group that all have to do with the Hebrew verb azar (azar), meaning to help or support. The name Ezri is mentioned only once in the Bible, in 1 Chronicles 27:26. He is a son of Chelub and one of King David's overseers. Ezri's job is to manage the farmers. In effect, he was King David's minister of agriculture.

There are two ways to look at this name. The core of it consists of the verb azar (azar), meaning to supply someone or some body of people with essential help or support. In Genesis 2:8 this verb is even used to describe the ultimate function of a man's wife. It should be noted that in the Bible the helper is always stronger than that which needs the help. Most often this helper is God, but in some cases it's a human agent, such as a wife.

The difference between the name Ezri and the other names of the "help"-stock is the post-fixed letter yod. This can be seen as a possessive yod, giving the the name Ezri the meaning My Help (NOBS Study Bible Name List).

The post-fixed yod can also be a remnant of the Divine name YHWH (YHWH), or Yahweh. That way the name Ezri means God Helps, or Help Of The Lord (Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names).

Other names derived of the verb azar are Abiezer, Azarel , Azariah, Azriel, Azrikam, Azzur, Eleazar, Eliezer, Ezer, Ezra(h), Iezer, Jazer and Romamti-ezer.
