🔼The name Beth-anoth in the Bible
🔼Etymology of the name Beth-anoth
The name Beth-anoth consists of two elements. The first part is identical to the common Hebrew word בית (bayit) meaning house:
The second part of our name comes from the root group ענה:
The anoth-part can be any noun derived from either of the four roots ענה. There is even speculation among scholars that it had to do with the female deity named Anat.
For a meaning of the name Beth-anoth, NOBSE Study Bible Name List reads House Of Anath (the goddess), and BDB Theological Dictionary timidly suggest the similar "= perhaps Temple Of Anat". Only Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names goes for the full translation, or at least one possible one, and reads House Of Response, "i.e. House Of Echo".
